Defending Against Strikes and Kicks

When defending from a strike, whether it is a punch or a kick, always attempt to side step or move out of the attacker's range. If this is not possible, close them down as quickly as possible.

Defending against various punches strikes and kicks

If you do not block effectively when being attacked at full speed and power, you may be weakened to the extent that you cannot counter attack your opponent.

Also, when you have closed down the attacker and are standing in a grapple situation, this is when the majority of your throwing techniques will be most effective.
