Recognised teaching standards
Practical coaching qualifications support clear, structured and safer instruction on every mat. Formal coaching development complements decades of martial-arts experience, helping instructors plan, demonstrate and assess learning responsibly.
Practical competence
The NVQ described by the club is a nationally recognised qualification tailored to sports coaching. It assesses competence through practical, job-related skills rather than theory alone.
Development pathway
Level 1 introduced instructors and assistants to the core requirements. The more advanced Level 2 involved a portfolio of evidence, regular workshops and assessment while teaching students at the instructor’s own club.
Professional standards
Professor Steve McDade holds Level 2 certification for coaching adults and children. Principal instructors also renew St John Ambulance first-aid training every three years, while MASA membership supports a professional training environment.
